Reasons You Should Always Travel Insured

Travellers are divided into two groups of people: those who don’t believe they need to travel insured, and those who know they do! It’s interesting that these divisions aren’t dictated by whether or not they go away often – in fact, many frequent travellers are as likely to belong to the first set as the second, and can be quite convincing since they allegedly speak from experience.

Much of the time, of course, they are right. While unlikely events can happen that may require an extra night’s stay in a hotel or a new ticket if a flight is cancelled, that is hardly a financial disaster. Still, it takes just one incident to create a disaster – and it does happen.

Here are five reasons why you need to always travel insured.

1. The high cost of medical treatment overseas. Foreign travel offices will always advise their citizens to travel insured – and for good reason. Many people assume that just because they have health insurance, they’re automatically covered when abroad – chances are, though, that coverage is limited to the home country. In a foreign country, you’ll still have to pay for medical care if you get sick or meet with an accident.

Whilst there are many countries where medical services are inexpensive, treatment in top quality hospitals with high-grade medical facilities will always cost a premium – particularly for tourists. It is always better to be covered against such eventualities. Especially in developing countries, hospitals may require a deposit to treat you. Although you will get treatment, you won’t be released until you have fully paid.

2. The high cost of medically assisted repatriation. If you need an even bigger reason to get cover, consider these air ambulance figures from the UK Foreign Office: GBP 35,000- 45,000 from the US East Coast, and GBP 12,000-16,000 from the Canary Islands. While there is only a small chance you will ever need these services, it only takes one incident to wreck your finances forever.

3. Changing weather conditions. Extreme weather conditions – and very surprising ones – are now the new “normal”. These extremes affect travel conditions more often and far more drastically than before, stranding passengers and cancelling flights. Without a good policy you can be out of pocket to the tune of thousands.

4. Changing political conditions. Planes getting turned back because of sudden upheaval, airports closed because of civil unrest – incidents like this are becoming more common these days, too. Get insurance for your own peace of mind. With any type of insurance policy, however, you need to read the fine print very carefully. While many providers will reimburse cancellations for trips to places where the government issues travel warnings, they rarely cover losses for those those who insist on going to countries under a travel advisory.

It’s true, many of the things covered under a policy may never come to pass, and that is a good thing. But when you travel insured, you will always get what you pay for: peace of mind!
